Fishing Line Bins

It’s our environment – let’s all leave it in a better state than we found it.

We have a beautiful home at Hunters Pool. It’s full of tree and plant life, many of which we are supporting with continued planting, especially of wildflowers, which, in turn has a positive effect on insect life and then onto our wildlife that live and visit Hunters.

We feel it’s our responsibility to nurture and protect everything at Hunters, so we are forever mindful of any negative, angling-related, impact we could possibly have there such as discarded line. On the very few instances this has happened, we have made it clear any rubbish should be taken away and disposed of properly, but, of course, occasionally, people do slip up.

As a result, we felt we had to be proactive and make it almost impossible to visit Hunters and leave discarded line, so we have several “Line Bins” around Hunters – strategically placed so anyone fishing can not enter or leave without passing at least 1 – and we have more planned. They are not particularly expensive to build – especially if you have one or more builders in the club with access to friendly staff at Builders Merchants or Plumbing Centres. Some of the items may be “seconds” or spares taking up space in their yards etc, so it’s worth investigating with some good humour and the result may be worth it.

Basically, there’s only 6 essential parts to the Line Bins we built…

  • Flexible End Cap 105-115mm
  • Push Fit Bend 90 Degree Double Socket Black 110mm – NB Make sure this is the SINGLE Socket version to take the Flexible End Cap
  • Soil Pipe 110mm (we simply cut the length to suit) Some pipe lengths have a “Centre push-fit double socket” at the end, so, if you’re building several, bear this in mind as you may benefit from purchasing one less of the next item below
  • Centre push-fit double socket 110mm
  • Drain blank cap black 110mm
  • Soil pipe clip 110mm (x2 per Bin)

Clearly, we used the 110mm Pipe as the beginning and then built the rest of the bin around it, cutting 2 lines that cross over in the Flexible End Cap, so the line can be pushed in. The Cap then closes again, stopping rainwater and animals etc. The Drain Blank Caps at the base are removable so we can empty the bins as and when needed. We then added signs on the bins so they simply couldn’t be missed.

As far as we’re aware, in the 3 years since the arrival of the line bins, we’ve not had a single incident of an animal suffering from an injury due to discarded line – just the way it should be!
